Personal Development & Citizenship (PDC)
At Rosebery we have designed a Personal Development and Citizenship (PDC) curriculum that is broad, varied and engaging. Our PDC provision plays a vital role in equipping our students with the skills and knowledge to prepare them for the opportunities and experiences of teenage life and adulthood. We aim to develop key character skills, including resilience, self-efficacy, and communication, ensuring our students can successfully navigate life in modern society.
We encourage exploration and respect of difference, enabling our students to play a positive role within our community. We use a spiral curriculum model to ensure our students are given the opportunity to revisit themes and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of these topics.
Below, you can click to view class resources, presentation slides, and more from each year group's PDC sessions. In the drop down menus at the bottom of this page, you may also find descriptions of the various strands and themes students will be learning about in their PDC journeys here at Rosebery.
PDC Strands
Money & Careers
This strand helps students develop essential life skills in managing money and exploring career options. Students will learn about budgeting, saving, earning, and making informed financial decisions. They will also explore different career pathways, gain an understanding of the world of work, and consider how their own skills, interests, and values can influence their future choices. Topics covered include understanding budgets, credit, key financial terms, and planning for both short- and long-term goals. This strand aims to equip students with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their finances and career aspirations.
Community & Responsibility
This strand encourages students to understand their role within their community and the wider world. It explores themes such as respect, active citizenship, diversity, and social responsibility. Students will learn about the importance of volunteering, making positive contributions, and standing up against discrimination and injustice. The strand also covers how individuals can influence change, both locally and globally, and helps students develop a sense of empathy, fairness, and responsibility towards others. It aims to foster a strong sense of belonging and encourage active participation in society.
Bullying & Discrimination
This strand helps students understand the impact of bullying and discrimination on individuals and communities. It covers different forms of bullying, including online and face-to-face, and explores the reasons why people may be targeted. Students will learn about the effects of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination based on race, gender, disability, religion, and other characteristics. The strand also focuses on strategies for preventing and responding to bullying, including how to seek help, support others, and challenge discriminatory behaviour. It aims to promote empathy, respect, and inclusion in all areas of life.
Media & Digital Literacy
This strand helps students develop the critical thinking skills needed to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly. It covers how the media can influence attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours. Students will explore topics such as online safety, misinformation, digital footprints, and the ethical use of technology. The strand also looks at the impact of social media on mental health and wellbeing, and encourages students to make informed, respectful choices when engaging with digital platforms. It aims to empower students to become responsible, critical, and confident digital citizens.
Physical & Mental Wellbeing
This strand supports students in developing a holistic understanding of their physical and mental health. It covers the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through balanced nutrition, regular exercise, good sleep habits, and personal hygiene. Students will also explore mental health and wellbeing, including how to manage stress, build resilience, and seek help when needed. The strand highlights the link between physical and mental health, and encourages students to develop habits that positively supports both their body and mind throughout different times in their lives.
Female Empowerment
This strand supports students in following their journey of becoming and being a woman in contemporary society. It covers topics such as looking after your menstrual health, healthy and informed decision making, navigating social pressures, cosmetic safety and awareness of keeping safe. The strand aims to empower students with the knowledge and confidence to navigate adolescence safely and positively.
Sex Education
This strand provides students with accurate, age-appropriate information about sex, consent, contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and reproductive health. It promotes safe, respectful choices and explores the emotional and physical aspects of intimate relationships. Students will also learn about rights, responsibilities, and where to access support and reliable information. The strand aims to empower students to make informed decisions that protect their wellbeing and respect the rights of others.
Relationships
This strand explores the qualities of healthy relationships, including respect, communication, trust, and empathy. Students will learn about different types of relationships – including friendships, family, and romantic connections – and how to manage them positively. The strand also covers conflict resolution, setting boundaries, and recognising unhealthy or harmful behaviours. It aims to equip students with the skills to build and maintain respectful, supportive, and safe relationships.
